Cycle Accident Claim

Cycling is an increasingly popular way of travelling around, especially in some towns and cities. However, due the exposed nature of a cyclist when on the road, they are at particular risk of accidents and injuries. If you have suffered an accident that wasn’t your fault whilst riding your pushbike, we can help you make a cycle accident claim for compensation.

Injuries sustained in cycle accidents can be very severe. Cyclists are regularly involved in collisions with cars, whose drivers are overly keen to pass and do not give them enough space when doing so. The unpredictable nature of the road and the conditions cyclists face when embarking on a journey make cyclists one of the most vulnerable road users in the UK today.

Despite this, the numbers of cyclists are increasing all the time. Many factors are contributing to this change: the record-high prices of running a car, economic difficulties, as well as a contingent who are turning to ‘greener’ methods of transport would generally be considered the main reasons. Unfortunately, many who believed they are doing a good deed for the environment or for their finances have ended up having to make a cycle accident claim after being involved in a nasty accident on the road.

Cycle Accident Claim Statistics

Figures from the Royal Society for the Prevent of Accidents show that there are well over 16,000 reported cycle accidents every year. Between 60%-90% of all cycle accidents are not even reported, which suggests there are potentially 150,000 separate incidents per year.

The March 2009 RoSPA report shows that of those 16,000 reported incidents, 136 deaths occurred, whilst 2,428 people suffered serious injuries. A further 13,631 sustained some form of personal injury whilst cycling.

Other cycle accident claim statistics show:

  • 90% of accidents happen in built up areas
  • 75% happen at or near a road junction
  • 80% occur in the daylight
  • 80% of casualties are male
  • Almost 25% of cyclists deaths or serious injuries are children
  • Around three quarters of cyclist fatalities are from serious head injuries

The most common causes of cycle accidents are from collisions with other drivers. T-junctions and roundabouts are particularly dangerous areas for cyclists using the roads.

As well as this, the road conditions are particularly important for the safety of a cyclist. Potholes, ice and items in the road can all cause a hazard and can lead to serious injury.

Common cycle accident claim types include head injuries (50%), limb injuries (40%), chest/abdomen injuries (5%), with other injuries making up the remaining 5%.

Making a Cycle Accident Claim for Compensation

Of course the majority of cyclists who take to the road will want to avoid ever being involved in a cycle accident. Unfortunately, even the safest of cyclists can not always avoid an accident if they are in the wrong place at the wrong time. In these situations, Injuries Direct can help you make a cycle accident claim for compensation.

New legislation was introduced last year which meant that even if you as the cyclist are partly to blame for the accident, you may still be eligible to claim if the other party is partly responsible.
