Child Road Accident Claim

The risk of a child being involved in a road accident is very high; especially as pedestrians. Many children like to play games by the roadside in busy housing estates and aren’t always aware of the dangers that the road present. Child road accident’s can occur by being knocked down by a vehicle on the road, or as a passenger of a car that experiences a crash. If your child has been injured and you are interested in making a child road accident compensation claim, we are here to help.

Approximately 5,000 children under the age of 16 die or are seriously injured on Britain’s roads each year. Nearly two-thirds of road accidents happen when children are walking or playing. Surprisingly, the likelihood of a child having an accident increases as they near the age of 16. This may be because this is the age where they feel braver and more inclined to ‘show off’ to friends, despite technically being more educated to the dangers of the road.

Child Road Accident Claim Statistics

The statistics for child road accident claim numbers are quite revealing. These include:

  • Almost two-third of child road accident victims are boys
  • A child from a low-income family is five times more likely to be killed in a road accident than a child from a high-income family
  • Children from an ethnic minority are involved in twice as many road accidents
  • Pre school children are the least likely to be injured or killed on the road
  • Children with hearing difficulties are ten times more likely to be involved in an accident
  • 80% of child road accidents happen during school holidays, weekends and in the evening on weekdays
  • On summer days children are more likely to be seriously injured or killed than on winter days

As well as this, it is now a requirement by law for children under certain age and height limits to sit in a specially designed car seat. Children under three must use a baby seat, whilst children aged between 3 and 12, who are under 135cm in height must be seated in a specialised child seat.

Unfortunately, these seats are not always safe despite being designed for exactly that reason. A study carried out by the AA found that 24% of child car seats are too loose, 21% of safety harnesses were too loose and 21% of the buckles were not fitted properly.

When used properly, rear facing seats were found to reduce the risk of fatality by 70%, forward facing seats by over 50% and the safety belts contributed to a reduction of 45%.
