Prescription Error Claims

Hundreds of thousands of medical prescriptions are written every single year for people who have fallen ill. In the majority of cases, doctors are able to determine exactly what is wrong with their patient and give them the right medicine based on their prior knowledge and experience. Unfortunately, there are occasions where medical professions get this wrong, either by making a mistake or completely misdiagnosing the illness. If this has happened to you we can help you make a prescription error claim for compensation.

Prescription errors can have a terrible affect on the patient. In the worst of cases the side effects can result in permanent disability or even death. Of course all depends on the extremity of the negligence, as well as how long and how much of the incorrect drug has been taken.

Examples of Prescription Error Claim

There are a number of ways in which a prescription error can occur. Some of these include:

  • Allergic reaction to medicine ingredients – Ingredients that a patient is allergic to should be noted within their medical records. If a doctor misses this, and prescribes them medicine containing this ingredient, they may experience serious side effects.
  • Incorrect dosage prescribed – This is usually in the case that too much medicine has been prescribed to the patient. Particularly dangerous is when a child has been given an adult dose. Pharmacists or doctors can misjudge the dosage required.
  • Medicine prescribed for too long – A patient taking certain medicines for too long can be very dangerous. Sometimes patients are allowed to order repeat prescriptions without regular consultation, which can lead to this error.
  • Two or more incompatible medicines taken together – Some medicines should not be taken together as they cause a chemical reaction when mixed. This can occur when a new medicine is prescribed without checking about existing prescriptions.

Of course there are many more ways in which prescription error negligence can occur. If you believe you are entitled to make a claim but are not sure how to go about doing so, contact us for free, professional advice.

Medical professionals have a duty of care to administer you with the correct medicine, whether you see an NHS doctor or a go to a private clinic. If they are unsure about what prescription to give you, they can check your symptoms on an NHS database to see which medicine is most appropriate for your illness. Failing this, doctors should seek a second opinion before prescribing anything. Prescription errors that cause injury or harm to you are therefore considered medical negligence and a claim for compensation can be made for this reason.
