Worker suffers with Hand Arm Vibration Syndrome

A man who has sustained Hand Arm Vibration Syndrome as a result of operating vibrating hand tools in his place of work, has been successful in his personal injury compensation claim this month.

It was heard that Mr Alexander Simpson, who is 60 years of age, was employed by an engineering company and continually used vibrating hand tools as part of his job. Mr Simpson used the one particular tool, a grinder, everyday throughout his employment up until 2007.

As a result of using these vibrating hand tools, Mr Simpson sustained Hand Arm Vibration Syndrome, which is an extremely painful and disabling disorder that forms in the blood vessels, joints, nerves and muscles in the arms and hands. When Mr Simpson’s hands get cold, they become numb and he then finds it extremely difficult to continue with his hobbies, such as gardening and working on cars.

After Mr Simpson was diagnosed with having Hand Arm Vibration Syndrome, he contacted a personal injury solicitor and pursued a personal injury compensation claim against his employer for not giving him any warning of the damaging affects of continually operating vibrating hand tools. His employers agreed a large amount of compensation and payment was agreed in an out of court settlement.
