TUC urge employers to reduce commuter times to ease workplace stress
Employers are being urged to help decrease worker’s commute times, in a bid to reduce workplace stress.
Currently, 21.8 million hours are spent commuting to and from work in the UK – the figures of which have been released to coincide with Work Wise UK’s Commute Smart Week. (9th – 13th November)
The hours spent in traffic, on the train or on other forms of transport equates to £266million of lost working time. The Trades Union Congress (TUC) is now calling for employees to find ways to cut the number of hours spent commuting, which they hope will reduce workplace stress.
Figures released this week also show that London workers have the longest daily commute at 74.2 minutes. Men working full-time have on average a 7.6 minute longer commute, whilst managers and senior officials commute for 68.6 minutes on average per day.
The statistics show that workers in well paid-jobs have longer commutes than those with lower-paid incomes such as cleaning or shop-work.
Work Wise UK are suggesting that employers introduce schemes such as flexi-time, staggered journeys and working from home as an initiative to improve the health and wellbeing of their staff.
