Man fell when carrying out routine maintenance
A company has been taken to court and fined after one of their employees sustained injuries due to an accident at work. The injuries occurred whilst he was carrying out maintenance on a piece of machinery, causing him to fall from a great height.
The injured man, who remains unnamed, is 53 years old. He was employed by a company whose premises were situated in Ringstead when the accident at work occurred on the 17th July 2008.
It was heard that the man was required to oil some of the chains on a pallet stacking machine, when he lost his balance and fell from a height that has been reported to be around six feet high. As a result of the accident at work, the man sustained a punctured lung and bruised ribs.
After the accident, the injured workman contacted his legal team and pursued a personal injury compensation claim against his employers known as Dobson and Horrell Ltd of Kettering. Dobson and Horrell Ltd of Kettering pleaded guilty during court proceedings for the injuries the man sustained and they were also found guilty of breaching Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999, which clearly state the following information:
“Every employer shall make a suitable and sufficient assessment of the risks to the health and safety of his employees to which they are exposed whilst they are at work.”
The injured man was awarded £2,000 and his employers were also ordered to pay £2,255 court costs.
