Who’s affected by Mis-sold PPI?

It’s believed that as many as 2 million people have been mis-sold PPI policies in the UK. PPI, or payment protection insurance, is often added to a loan amount, drastically increasing the monthly payment or payment duration period. This means that the bank or lender not only benefits from the PPI premiums which you are unlikely to ever need, as well as huge amounts in increased interest as a result.

PPI scams have been the centre of financial controversy over the past few months, especially as many struggle with money problems. Banks and lenders often try to enforce PPI onto people borrowing money, using hard-sell tactics such as declaring their loan application won’t be accepted unless they take out a PPI policy. Unfortunately, during times of financial uncertainty, with people unsure if they are safe in their jobs, lenders sense maximum opportunity to inflict these views onto people and make them believe them.

However, it is by no means true that taking out PPI would result in a higher likelihood of being accepted and nor should a salesman ever let you believe so. Doing this in itself is grounds for a mis-sold PPI policy claim.

Types of Mis-Sold PPI

Mis-sold PPI can also come in other forms. The main problem for most that need to claim on their PPI is that they find they are rejected due to their circumstances. It has been found that around 85% of those who needed to claim on their PPI because of unemployment or ill-health were told they did not have sufficient grounds to make a claim.

For example, if the person with PPI were to suffer work-related back problems or stress, they would not be eligible to claim. This is similarly the case for those who took out the PPI policy when they were unemployed, self-employed or retired.

The lender should make these points very clear to their customer, however, as many have unfortunately discovered, this has not always been the case. This means that hundreds, maybe thousands of pounds has been paid unnecessarily to lenders, banks or credit card companies, with no initial way of getting the money back.

The final and possibly most shocking of mis-sold PPI types is from those who discover they are paying PPI on their loan when they didn’t even discuss or agree to it being added in the first place. It is the lender’s duty to inform their buyer of the PPI being added to their loan, and to inform them of what this offers. If they have not done so, they have mis-sold the policy to you.
