More info

The main health risks to workers exposed to Isocyanates include asthma (attacks of wheezing, coughing, chest tightness and breathlessness) and rhinitis (runny or congested nose). Isocyanates are also irritants and splashes in the eyes may cause chemical conjunctivitis (inflamed eyes), while contact on the skin can lead to dermatitis.

Substances and products based on Isocyanates are widely used in a variety of manufacturing and service industries. Some of the uses and processes where workers may be at risk from Isocyanates include:

  • Use of certain surface coatings, particularly spray painting of vehicles
  • Production of polyurethane rubbers, foam and other moulded articles
  • Manufacture of metal-faced building panels
  • In thermal insulation (of buildings, refrigerators and other domestic appliances)
  • In printing and laminating products
  • Manufacture of footwear (shoe and boot soles as well as synthetic uppers)
  • Solvent-based and hot melt adhesives
  • Stove enamelling

Employers and managers need to take precautions, to prevent or control exposure to Isocyanates. This is a legal requirement under the Control of Substances Hazardous to Health (COSHH) Regulations 1999.

Find out more about asthma caused by isocyanates compensation claims by Contacting Us now.

A fundamental requirement of the COSHH Regulations is that exposure of employees to substances hazardous to health should be prevented or where this is not reasonably practicable, adequately controlled. The occupational exposure limits relating to exposure by inhalation are listed in the 1999 edition of EH 40 Occupational Exposure Limits.

Failure of an employer to comply with these regulations may leave you with a claim for compensation.
