Carbon monoxide is a colourless, odourless, tasteless but poisonous gas produced by the incomplete burning of carbon-based fuels such as gas, oil, wood and coal. Carbon-based fuels are safe to use, however, when the fuel does not burn properly, dangerous levels of carbon monoxide is produced – which are a poison threat.
When carbon monoxide enters the body, it prevents the blood from bringing oxygen to cells, tissues, and organs. Early symptoms of carbon monoxide poisoning can mimic many common ailments and may easily be confused with food poisoning, viral infections, flu or simple tiredness.
Carbon monoxide is sometimes known as ‘the silent killer’, as it can kill quickly and without warning. Around 20 people a year die from carbon monoxide poisoning in the UK caused by gas appliances and flues that have not been properly installed, maintained or that are poorly ventilated.
